My Eastern spiritual teachers had taught me, “God is everywhere, in everything and in everyone”; my Peruvian and Lakota teachers had shown me the power and sacredness of land. Paul taught me how to further extend these awarenesses into lived experience in a number of ways. For one thing, he showed me how to build a relationship to trees; to redwood trees; and to a particular, beloved tree that I might choose.
Specifically, he taught me how make a small offering of respect, extend my energy from my belly to a redwood tree, and wait until our energies synced together. When this happened, I would feel a presence that probably can’t be accurately described, but as close as I can come would be to say it is patient, deep, wise, pulses down into the earth and up into the stars: and when I connected with it, my own experience was one of patient, grounded but expansive and relational love and wellbeing. It was deeply comforting to know that I could approach such a tree to help me re-establish my connection to the earth and the stars as I regularly become distracted throughout my daily life. I believe learning this capacity in turn impacts the quality of presence I can sometimes bring others in moments of need, as well.
